Bixi, Montreal’s breakthrough bike sharing technology which was chosen as the technology for the future Boston bike share, is coming to Boston this weekend.  There will be a Bixi demonstration, with a solar-powered station, several bikes which you can try out, and many people to ask questions of.  As the new Program Manager for Alta Bicycle Share, I will be around for both of the demos below.

Details for the Bixi demonstrations:

  • During the TD Bank Mayor’s Cup Professional Bike Race on Saturday September 26 from 2PM to 7PM at 1 City Hall Plaza, Boston, MA 02108
  • During the Hub on Wheels Bike Ride on Sunday September 27 from 9AM to 2PM at 1 City Hall Plaza, Boston, MA 02108
  • I will be riding the Hub on Wheels Ride with several Bixi folks on Bixi Bikes, so if you are riding, please come find us!

This will be a great opportunity to see the bikes that will be all over Boston soon enough.  and I just spent last week riding Bixi around Montreal and had a blast.

Exciting news about Boston bike sharing!  The team of which I am a part was awarded the Boston area bike share by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), as detailed in this Boston Globe article.  The bike share will involve Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Somerville and Arlington.

This is going to be a major project for the Boston region and there will be a major need and desire for community involvement.  This blog will document the unfolding of this bike share, progress on implementation, posting of community meetings and a place for people to give input.  I will Twitter (www.twitter.com/bloobike) when I update the blog.

I started a small company in December 2007 called Bloo Bike to create and manage bike shares in the Boston area for private entities.  When it became apparent in August 2008 that the City of Boston was going to do a large-scale bike share, I changed the trajectory of the company and teamed up with Bixi, Alta and Central Bike Services to propose to manage the Boston bike share.  As companies focused on bicycles, we intend to manage this bike share locally, efficiently, responsively, with the goal of making the community healthier, greener and cleaner.

Here is some more information:

  • Bixi (short for Bicycle Taxi) started the first North American large-scale bike share in Montreal and was recently awarded the London bike share also.
  • Alta Planning and Design is internationally known bicycle consulting / planning company.  I will soon be the Bicycle Share Program Manager to manage all the bike share operations.
  • Central Bike Services does bike facilities management in the Boston area.

Thank you to everyone in Boston and beyond who has lent help, advice, enthusiasm and support of many kinds towards the concept of bike sharing.  I look forward to hearing from you, seeing you in Boston, and working on this awesome project.
